A backlink is any link received by a web page, directory, website from another web page, directory, and websites. Backlinks are also called incoming links, inbound links, inlinks, and inward links.
Backlinks can contribute to a websites PageRank when the Search Engines (SE) used this backlinks when it udergoes a search for a type keyword. Having a lot of backlinks to your site can help your Search Engine Optimization ( S.E.O ) and make your website visible in the SERPs (Search Engine Result Pages) in most Search Engines.
There are ways to get backlinks: The Natural Way (preferred by most Search Engines) or the Unnatural Way (which could lead your site to being banned by Search Engines)
The Natural Way to get backlinks is to find a web site which are similar to your content and already having a PR (Page Rank) of 3 and above and contact the webmaster if you could link with their pages. Also try submitting to different Web Directories to increase backlink results like Dmoz,Yahoo or Google, or you could just type your keyword “Web Directories” and check which offer free services to include your site in their directories.
The Unnatural Way to increase backlinks are inter-linking (linking from one site to another site, which is owned by the same owner ), linking to spam sites or sites that host any kind of illegal content, purchasing links in bulk.
Also when trying to backlink with other websites always remember that some websites may be a link farm also check the ratio between your outgoing links and incoming links. Avoid having more outgoing links than that of your incoming links that would be bad for your SEO success.
